Dana Scully was born in February, 1964, to Margaret and William Scully. She was raised along with her two older siblings and a younger brother in a devout Catholic family with Irish ancestry. As child, her favorite book was Moby-Dick. She nicknamed her navy captain father Ahab, who in return called her Starbuck. Due to this childhood nostalgia, she later named her adopted dog, a male Pomeranian, Queequeg. She wrote her undergraduate thesis, "Einstein's Twin Paradox: A New Interpretation" at the age of 23 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of Maryland. She went on to study medicine at Stanford University, and was then recruited by the FBI fresh out of medical school. Much to her father's dismay, she accepted the offer, believing the FBI would be a place where she could distinguish herself. After only two years, she was assigned to work with agent Fox Mulder, whom she only knew by his reputation at Quantico. Her assignment became monitoring Mulder's work from a scientist's point of view and reporting to her superiors at the FBI in an attempt to debunk the X-files—the unexplained paranormal cases that Mulder had taken a passionate interest in.While assigned to the X-files, Scully maintained her medical skills by acting as a forensic pathologist, often performing or consulting on autopsies related to the cases. She refused to deliver reports that catered to the interests of her superiors. Instead, her reports always accurately described the events she witnessed without scientific bias, leading to most X-files remaining unexplained or unsolved. Her logical reasoning quickly became a balancing force for Mulder, while his beliefs, combined with her own faith, allowed her to open her mind to possibilities beyond what could be explained by science.
